About Manooré FM: The Voice of Women
Manooré FM was the first radio station in Senegal designed
for women and ran by women. Since operations began in 2002, Manooré has
operated in the middle of Dakar allowing broadcasts to reach more than two
million people in six languages. Manooré FM broadcasted new and
information, programs of social, cultural, economic, literary, historical,
political and youth focused emissions in Wolof, Diola, Serer, Pulaar, Mandinka,
and French. All of these complex, important issues they addressed from a
feminist perspective to raise awareness about how everyday issues affect women
specifically.
Falling in the category of associative radios with less technical, financial and human resources compared to commercial radio, FM Manooré quickly established itself in the radio landscape. Manooré FM came to establish its identity and give proof that the choice to focus on issues of gender and development is relevant and was in response to strong demand of populations. In reporting the achievements of women, organized or not, government, NGOs,development partners,Manooré FM reinforces the hope, or rather the belief that it is possible to reverse current trends and escape to illiteracy and ignorance, disease, reduce the burden of poverty failing to get out altogether, if that is how economic, political, legal, are implemented.
Manooré FM is the proof to the claim that women want to invest the field of mass communication to assert their right to communication and the free expression and their desire to promote a better image of women in the media. Thanks in effect to its news programming, its special pages, its magazines, its debates, reports, records, Manooré FM already contributes substantially to present a more real, more balanced representation of women, their struggles and their contribution to development in Senegal. Manooré FM serves women and has become a forum for women to challenge the authorities on their difficulties and problems and the help they should provide. The radio also serves as a forum for discussion and exchanges on human rights issues, health, access to credit and is a means to publicize their organizations and their activities.
Manooré has already had a sizable impact on the lives of those they have reached. Manooré is simply too important to let die with this fire. Too important to stop spreading awareness and standing up for women. Manooré FM, the voice of women, is too important to be silenced.
