The Manooré FM Recovery Fund
Tragically, the “Voice of women” in Dakar, Sénégal, was silenced on 1 September 2011. Manooré FM, the first radio station in Senegal devoted entirely to women’s issues and training women in journalism, was destroyed in a fire. This fund is on behalf of a campaign to rebuild the station and restore this crucial medium of communication and empowerment.
Manooré FM, “the voice of women,” is a community radio station established in Dakar, Senegal in 2002. For the last 9 years, Manooré has provided a medium of communication to women and allied actors in development to support the promotion of women, the fight against poverty, and sustainable development. Their mission from the beginning has been to use mass communication to respond to the information and communication needs of women, to highlight their participation in sustainable development, and to spread messages of social justice, progress, equality, and equity. Manooré FM broadcast in 6 languages, reaching about 2 million men, women and children in Senegal. There mission was bold and their impact huge.
The fire that struck early on the morning of September 1 destroyed the station, its full range of broadcast, recording and editing equipment, and the studios, office space and records of thus remarkable community resources. Though thankfully no one was hurt, the well trained and passionate staff now are left with no means to do their work.
The reconstruction and rebooting of the radio will take time, and many resources. The community based radio needs help and collaboration to bring back the voice of women as soon as possible. This is a call to begin a campaign of solidarity. Together we have a unique opportunity to not only rebuild a crucially important radio station, but rebuild it better. We hope to 'set Manooré on fire' so to speak by giving the small community radio more power to do its very important work.
You can help the cause by donating now. Thank you for supporting the cause and helping to give a louder, stronger voice back to women.
